Rainbow and Pot of Gold

Rainbow and Pot of Gold

This pattern is presented in conjunction with the Online Tatting Class.

There are many methods for moving up to the next row in block tatting. I am using the abbreviation "EOR" (end of row) to indicate where to use your favorite method. Some popular methods are:

Lock Stitch Method: Lock Stitch, turn, Switch Shuttles (LS turn SS)
Modified SLT Method: Shoe lace tie, turn, half stitch (SLT turn hs)
Direct Chain Method: Work 1 ds between rows, alternate rows of regular and unflipped stitches.

Abbreviations:
betw Between
Ch Chain
clr Close Ring
CTM Continuous thread method (do not cut thread between shuttles or between shuttle and ball)
EOR End of row
+LJ Lock join (aka shuttle join)
LS Lock stitch: 1st half of DS is NOT flipped, 2nd half is flipped as usual
p, - Picot
R Ring
RW Reverse work
SS Switch shuttles
turn Like a page, side-to-side, rather than up-and-down as for reverse work
vsp Very small picot
+ Join
( ) Encloses comments
[ sts ] # times Work the indicated stitches, repeated # of times
{sts} # times Work the indicated stitches, repeated # of times (curly bracket enclose square brackets)

Rainbow

Three shuttles recommended. Begin with a shuttle wound CTM with ball of pink or red. Have 2 shuttles standing by with yellow and green. As shuttles are cut off, wind again with blue and violet thread.

Basic Pattern

(dead end start)
Row 1: Ch: [ vsp 4 ] 11 times, SLT turn RW
Row 2: Ch: vsp [ 4 +LJ (to vsp) ] 11 times, LS turn SS
Row 3-4: {Ch: vsp [ 4 +LJ (to LJ) ] 2 times, [ 5 +LJ (to LJ) ] 7 times, 4 +LJ (to LJ) 4 +LJ (to vsp), LS turn SS} twice
Row 5: Ch: [ 4 +LJ (to LJ) ] 2 times, [ 6 +LJ (to LJ) ] 7 times, 4 +LJ (to LJ) 4 +LJ. Cut and tie to vsp.

Instructions for encapsulation and changing colors:

Row 1: When there are 5 or 6 stitches left to go, pick up the yellow thread shuttle and hold it in your hand with the pink/red one. (A bit of tape or tacky stuff for hanging posters may help hold them together.) Holding both shuttles together, work the remaining stitches of the row and the yellow thread will be automatically encapsulated within the pink/red stitches. (Terry McGuffin taught me this trick, isn’t it great?) SLT and turn.
Row 2: Cut the pink/red ball thread, and wind the yellow thread on your hand as the ball thread. Begin working this row, encapsulating over the pink/red thread end. When you are close to the end of the row, pick up the green thread shuttle and holding it together with the yellow one, work the remainder of the row as before. Note: for lock joins, pull up a loop of just the original thread to avoid pulling out the end of the newly added thread. LS or SLT and turn.
Row 3-5: Use the “ball thread” shuttle of the previous row as the core thread (shuttle in your hand) for this row. Use the newly added color as the ball thread. The core thread of the previous row will be eliminated. You may cut it and encapsulate over the tail as before, or you could hold this shuttle together with the new core thread shuttle and work a few stitches to encapsulate and then cut the thread. At the end, you will have only one loose end to sew in.

Pot of Gold

1 shuttle wound CTM with ball (or 2 shuttles wound CTM for the Lock Stitch method). Use the EOR (end of row) method of your choice.

Use sequins, beads, etc for gold.

Many thanks to Jane Eborall for test tatting the patterns.
