The book we're reading for July is Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line by Charles Waddell Chesnutt, a Penguin Classics paperback published in 2000. It includes two books by Chesnutt, The Conjure Woman and The Wife of His Youth. There are also two related magazine stories, "Dave's Neckliss" and "Baxter's Procrustes." A Dover book called Tales of Conjure and the Color Line has fewer stories, but it does contain the essential ones. The public library has several books that contain the conjure stories. All of the stories are also available online. What follows is a list of the stories in Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line, with links to their online sources:

If time is short, read "The Goophered Grapevine," "Po' Sandy," "The Wife of His Youth," "A Matter of Principle," and "The Sheriff's Children."

Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) is a good source for more information.
