Columbia County was formed in 1832, thirteen years before Florida was admitted to the Union, in 1845. The main town named "Alligator," in Columbia County, was changed to "Lake City" in 1859. In 1861 Florida seceded from the Union and became a part of the Confederate States of America. On February 20, 1864, the Battle of Olustee, one of the bloodiest of the The War of Northern Aggression, was fought just to the east of Lake City. The latest courthouse for Columbia County was built in 1905, and was recently renovated to the tune of several million dollars. Columbia County is sometimes called the "Crossroads of Florida." It is the location of the intersections of Interstates 10 and 75 and United States Highways 41, 441, and 90.
